Core of the Business
Foundational Questions
Q: What inspired you to start this business?
A: I have been doing this for 20 years. I worked in a small salons in Hicksville and even Colorado; I also have been to several different salons. I have done management, styling and all sorts of different roles. After all that, I decided to start my own business.
Q: How did the business get its name?
A: It got its name because we were on Main Street at the time. I had tons of different ideas, which I sent to my friends and family for their opinions. We eventually landed on Main Street; although it’s located on High street, it’s the main street going through town.
Q: What’s your mission or core philosophy?
A: For me and what inspires me, I want to grow on people and grow as a stylist. There are a lot of people that think that stylists don’t make a certain amount of money and society just has tons of bad opinions on stylists, and I want to prove to them that I can do it and do it well. I want to break the stereotypes and show people what it’s really like.
Q: How long have you been in business, and how has it evolved over time?
A: I have been in the business for nine years; It was five years in the old space and I’m just now coming up on four years of being in the new place. It started with just me, and over time we’ve grown with the amount of employees – the most being eight at one point. We added a nail section, which we didn’t expect, and the trends and techniques over time have changed what we do.
Inside the Business
Services & Specialties
Q: What products or services do you offer?
A: We offer all types of hair services, ranging from men’s cuts and colors, texture services, color correction, all over color, facial waxing, manicure and pedicures and more. Some products we have are our Color Wow line, Hempz, Redkin, Color Fanatic, Lorel and more.
Q: What sets your business apart from others in the industry?
A: For me, this is the first salon I have ever worked in where I have trained someone side by side with me. I want to hire people out of school, who are new to the industry and who are eager to learn. We would work with them to find their skills and their clientele. I would focus on teaching people things that they never learned in school. I want to work on growing with people because I didn’t have that when I was in school. I wanted my salon to be different from what other salons are, and to encourage people to continue to work and not give up.
Q: Who is your ideal customer?
A: I love anyone who wants to hire me to travel for a wedding. I also love anyone who gets color, who takes home products with them and who comes in every 6-8 weeks.
Q: What’s something people might not know about your business?
A: People might not know that we have different levels of stylists. We have four different levels; If my prices aren’t what you want, then we have other stylists who have trained alongside me who have different prices than me.
Behind the Business
Passion & Purpose
Q: What’s your favorite part of your job?
A: My favorite part is my clients. I don’t love being in huge group settings, which is why I love the clients. I love getting to know them and having special connections with people over the years; getting to see their excitement and transformation after they get their hair done is something I especially love. The staff I work with I absolutely love. We are all close with each other.
Q: What’s a memorable or success story?
A: It was the year of covid; new years eve. We were open in the morning and someone called in to get a perm at the last moment. One of my employees came in to do it. The client was in a gown but she sat up and got water down her shirt. She had two shirts on and we asked her to take one of them off. Instead of doing that, she stripped down to nothing and told us to dry off all her clothes.
A success story would definitely be the renovation before we opened and the first four years we were open.
Q: Who has been the biggest influence or mentor in your business journey?
A: My parents; they have been very supportive of everything. They supported me when I decided to go to school for hair. Also my Colorado regional manager; she pushed me to get my goals and reach them. She was hard on me because of all the potential she saw that I didn’t. She was a huge influence on everything and I’m very thankful for everything she’s done.
Quick Hits
Fun & Personal
Q: Go-to coffee order or favorite lunch spot?
A: My go-to coffee order is from Amanda Lee’s, and it’s the banana toffee chai.
Q: If your business had a theme song, what would it be and why?
A: Definitely something obnoxious. Eye of the Tiger is the one song I think of for some reason.
Q: What advice would you give to someone starting out in your field?
A: It’s a lot of work. You have to show up everyday with a smile on your face and your hair and makeup done. A lot of people come out of school showing up in whatever’s comfortable. If you show up not ready to work, your clients are going to see you as someone who’s not ready. You have to talk to your clients and act like you want to be there. You’re going to have to put yourself out there even if it’s uncomfortable.
Q: Favorite inspirational quote?
A: I saw this quote in a book when I was about to start my salon; “But then I realized, what do they really know? This is MY idea, I thought. No one knows it like I do. And it’s okay if it’s different, and weird, and maybe a little crazy. I decided to protect it, to care for it. I fed it good food. I worked with it, I played with it. But most of all, I gave it my attention.“ The quote is from the book “What do you do with an idea?” written by Kobi Yamaha.
Q: How can we support Main St. Studio?
A: They can support us by sharing posts of our hair and tagging us. They can also check out our retail sales, they can leave reviews, send referrals, and they can shout out.
